Let’s talk about Sicily. This isn’t just any Italian region. It’s a magnificent island world unto itself. As the largest island in the Mediterranean, its 26,000 square kilometres (about 10,000 square miles) – roughly the size of countries like North Macedonia or Albania – are packed with diversity. It’s a place where ancient history feels vividly alive.
But don’t be fooled by its present-day, relaxed charm. Sicily was once a powerhouse, a coveted prize for history’s greatest empires. Before its unification with Italy in 1861, the island was a cultural crossroads, ruled successively by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans. This layered past is etched into every stone and flavour, making it a living, breathing history book.
Agrigento & The Stair of the Turks: Walking with the Ancients
Our first standout stop was the town of Agrigento on the southwest coast. This place is an absolute must-see for any history enthusiast. The main attraction is the breathtaking Valley of the Temples, a sprawling UNESCO World Heritage site where seven majestic Greek temples, dating from the 5th century BC, stand as a testament to the island’s Hellenic glory. Walking among these ancient ruins as the sun beats down is a truly humbling experience.
A short ten-kilometre drive west leads you to one of nature’s marvels: the Scala dei Turchi (Stair of the Turks). I highly recommend finding a spot in a nearby car park and dedicating a few hours to this unique place. This stunning, white marl cliff cascades down to the turquoise sea like a natural staircase, creating a picture-perfect spot for relaxation. Be warned – it can be wonderfully breezy, so hold onto your hat!
Trapani: A Charming Coastal Escape
Moving to the northwest, we discovered the understated charm of Trapani. While it’s not as thronged with tourists as other hotspots, this coastal city has an authentic allure, with an economy still deeply rooted in fishing and its historic salt pans. We found it delightful to wander its city streets and picturesque coastline. The best part? You’ll stumble upon countless lovely cafes serving up some of the most delicious and fresh seafood you can imagine.
For travellers, Trapani’s airport serves as a fantastic gateway, handling over 1.5 million passengers a year. While most flights connect to other Italian cities, you can also jet off to destinations like Prague, Karlsruhe, and Amsterdam. It’s a brilliant alternative to Palermo if you’re planning to explore the island’s western and southern gems.
Erice: The Icing on the Cake
If our entire Sicilian adventure was a delicious cake, then the hilltop town of Erice was the exquisite cherry on top. Perched high above the Province of Trapani, the journey up is half the fun, though it requires a bit of patience as you navigate the winding roads.
We arrived on a mysterious, foggy morning. Our first challenge was a classic Italian puzzle: finding a parking space on the town’s incredibly steep and narrow streets. Once we’d successfully navigated that, we continued our ascent on foot. Wandering through the misty, medieval alleyways was an ethereal experience. Then, as we reached the summit, the fog began to magically dissolve, revealing a view that was so unexpectedly stunning it took our breath away. The panorama over the coastline was simply unforgettable.
This was our final stop before heading to Palermo airport, and what a magnificent farewell it was. Erice is the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
