An easy and quick way to prepare vegetable salad with crab sticks

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 crab sticks; maybe more
  • Half of a sweet red pepper
  • 100 – 150 grams of a leek
  • A couple of chopped onion slices
  • 2 tablespoons of sour cream
  • Half a tablespoon of Provencal mayonnaise
  • Half a teaspoon of mustard
  • A pinch of salt

Preparation

Crab sticks and peppers are cut into pieces, the leek is cut first into four parts along the length (it must be washed), and then cut into thin slices. Cut a few slices from the onion and chop. Add sour cream, mayonnaise, mustard, and a pinch of salt to all this in a bowl and mix.
The salad is quite spicy, if you wish something lighter, chopped leeks can be fried a little in a pan. You can also learn more about leeks.

This vegetable salad as a meal is good enough for a man who needs dinner. It can also be used as a snack.
The salad is juicy enough and can be accompanied by rye bread for dinner.

Crab sticks

Something is interesting to learn about crab sticks, which have almost nothing to do with crabs at all.
Crab sticks are a popular product that you can buy in every supermarket and use/prepare in many different ways, both in cold salads and in warm dishes (this is not really my way of eating them but who knows – maybe one day I will learn to cook something interesting and will like them).
Like many instant foods, crab sticks are sometimes considered a quick snack and automatedly an unhealthy food. However, I believe that everything can be unhealthy if you either eat too much or do not prepare food properly – everything can be consumed in moderate quantities and nothing bad would happen to you.

Crab sticks are prepared from chopped and processed fillets of white fish, which turn into a liquid paste during processing. By adding egg whites, butter, and spices to it, you end up with surimi. Surimi manufacturers say that foods made with surimi are high in protein, low in calories, healthy and contemporary. In any case, they are tasty and edible and no additional processing is necessary.
So why are they named crab sticks? Everything is extremely simple – a natural or artificial crab extract is added to the product, and it is stained with a pink dye so that both the taste and the colour resemble crabs.
